It is true, the city of Truth or Consequences got its name from a game show. In March 1950, the town of Hot Springs, New Mexico decided to change its name to Truth or Consequences after a popular NBC radio quiz show. By officially changing its name, Hot Springs won the honor of hosting the show’s tenth anniversary broadcast, with a grand, star-studded parade through town. And thus, Truth or Consequences (T or C) was born.
In many ways, the quirky nature of this story exemplifies the town: home to a delightful assortment of artists, musicians, intellectuals, eccentrics and fascinating folks with storied pasts. From this blend of individuals has grown a tight-knit community, woven into the atmosphere among shops, spas, galleries, hotels, restaurants and our own first-rate brewery.
All the while, beneath the friendly character of this place lies that for which it was originally named, the hot springs.
T or C’s downtown Hot Water District has an abundance of hot spring establishments, including hotels and vacation rentals with an opportunity for unlimited private soaking. This funky little town is actually a gem of a wellness destination with world-class mineral waters. There’s not a lot of distractions in T or C—and this can be a very good thing for those who need to unplug, relax and nourish themselves.
