Sound meditations are an exploration inside ourselves facilitated by tone, frequency, vibration, and harmonics. Participants recline or lie comfortably, with open attention, inviting deep relaxation. The calmly lit Acoustic Room is a magical container for the lovely sounds of our meditative instruments.
Pure-tone crystal bowls, didgeridoo, drum, monochord, Hang, Gubal, RAV, N’Goni, Shruti Box, the Wave, chimes, flutes, human voice and more resonate with pristine clarity throughout the space.
The instruments and harmonic frequencies are used to invite coherency within us, awakening our healing potential. They help initiate a reset toward peace, fluidity, integration and health. Sound meditations are a time for letting go of limiting beliefs, opening new possibilities, and connecting with our body’s inherent ability to heal itself.
My approach to sound healing was largely informed by a six-year relationship with two dolphins named Camilla and Fiona. Before they passed away, these dolphins were subjected to a tragic life of captivity. Though powerless to change their fate, I was allowed on the island to spend time with them and interact with them however I wished. Most times, it was just the three of us.
Traveling back and forth every few months to their Caribbean island, it was my mission to be a good friend and good company for Camilla and Fiona, in their terribly sad living conditions.
We spent our time swimming, playing, meditating and communing through sound. Singing bowls, tuning forks, drum, voice and particularly–the didgeridoo–were all used in our sound communication. The didgeridoo had a calming effect on the dolphins. They would float in stillness or move their bodies to receive the sound. So I played it for them with healing intention.
We spent countless hours together looking deeply into each other’s eyes, connecting through the low frequency of this aboriginal instrument.
Other times as I played, Camilla and Fiona would close their eyes, so I’d close mine. We’d commune in a deeper, internal way. On these inner sound journeys, my awareness was consistently drawn into the center of my forehead, into a golden light. My spine and breath were energized and empowered; there was a clear sense of coherency, peace and healing inside me. All this was happening while I played the didgeridoo–in earnest, offering healing energy to Camilla and Fiona.
As I did my best to give to them, to befriend and comfort the dolphins in their tragic situation, they somehow acted as conduits resonating healing frequencies inside of me.
Even as Camilla and Fiona languished in their imprisoned life, our interactions somehow awakened this healing phenomena. I could only hope with all my heart they were experiencing something similar inside themselves. It was profoundly moving to see these beautiful creatures–so oppressed and mistreated–yet somehow connected to a mysterious and powerful healing intelligence, a larger coherent field, that they were sharing with me.
At times during our sound communications, Camilla and Fiona began swimming in a very distinct and meditative pattern. They would swim very, very slowly, side by side, underwater, clockwise in a large circle, round and round the circumference of their pool. In their underwater circle, they would only surface when they passed me by, lifting their heads to look at me, and then submerging into the next circle. I fondly called this the “trance-mission” swim, because of the altered state of awareness, information download and creative awakening I experienced through this exchange.
My attempt to offer nurturing and healing for Camilla and Fiona wound up being a mystical education in the power of frequency, resonance and entrainment. It was an immersion into the dolphins’ mysterious acoustic world–a receiving of information from them, on their terms. This was not in the realm of human words and language, but rather in the realm of the heart, in the realm of feeling. It was communication from the dolphin mind. It was connection through heart resonance–a transmission of information by sound and vibration. It was entering into a larger coherent field with new realms of healing and creative potential. Camilla and Fiona completely shaped my use of sound as a healing modality. I use this modality in their loving memory.
In the Sound Meditations, we bring intention for the innate healing intelligence to awaken inside us. We invoke our natural, self-correcting potential to emerge, as we relax and let go into frequency and harmonics. Mindfulness and intention enhance the process.
As you consciously pay attention within, your awareness becomes a powerful tool to explore the inner terrain and discover new possibilities for healing to emerge.
Rational analysis is suspended as you redirect your thought process through focused attention on your body’s “felt sense.” Like sun rays traveling through a magnifying glass, fragmented thoughts transform into an empowered beam of conscious awareness.
The mind’s focus is heightened by the sound and vibration, as they guide your perception into your vast inner world—into feeling, sensation, memory, imagery, insight and expanded states of consciousness. Through this process you connect with your body wisdom and attune to the self-healing intelligence within you.
As we dive inside our experience in the Sound Meditation and explore the relationship with our inherent healing intelligence, we may experience our body initiating self-correcting activity. This could be deep relaxation, ease of breathing, release of tissue tension, structural realignment, clearing of congestion, etc.
We view this self-correcting activity as our body moving toward homeostasis, its preferred state of balance and equilibrium.
In support of homeostasis, we use the sound instruments to bring balancing frequencies into the tissues. As the tones and harmonics resonate inside us, we invite a response toward healing. We invite coherency into our cells and all our body systems. The Sound Meditations are a catalyst for attuning us to a deepening of our healing process.
During the Sound Meditation, as coherency is awakened in each person, it has the potential to manifest within the entire group. The healing tones act as a common denominator, resonating within each person at the same frequency.
As the group shares this common frequency and individuals move into coherency, we explore the possibility of entrainment, where coherency manifests throughout the group, and within the group as a whole.
We create potential for a unified coherent field. In our Sound Meditations, we invite this larger sense of Oneness into the group, and with it, a larger sense of connection, integration and healing. In the comfort and potency of this field, we are soothed and revitalized.
The perfect fifth is a musical interval: the combined sound of the first and fifth notes on a musical scale. As an example, the notes C and G, when played together make a perfect fifth (so do G and D, A and E, etc.).
The tone of the perfect fifth is familiar to the ear and comforting to the body. It has a soothing and balancing quality to it.
Through years of use on the treatment table, we find this frequency to work synergistically with the Still Point phenomena in Craniosacral Therapy, bringing equilibrium and coherency to the nervous system and the entire body. The perfect fifth is used in Sound Meditations as a universal tone to awaken our innate healing intelligence and self-correcting mechanisms. This frequency is used with multiple instruments, in multiple ways, bringing a beautiful array of harmonics into the space.
Chakras are energy centers in the body. There are seven primary chakras located along our midline. The word chakra means “wheel,” describing a dynamic, bioenergetic force emitting from our core. The seven energy centers exist at the base of the spine, the pelvis, the solar plexus, heart, throat, midforehead and top of the head.
Each chakra holds a different quality of our being: survival, sexuality, personal power, love, expression, insight and mystical knowing.
Each individual chakra corresponds to a note on a musical scale. In Sound Meditations we use pure-tone crystal singing bowls with notes that correspond to each chakra. With these pure tones amplified through the quartz medium, we invite resonance, entrainment and coherency into the individual energy centers. This helps bring whole-person balance and integration inside us.
